The 17th PARS Florida International Junior Championship took place Dec. 28-30.
2012 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Weather
conditions were very tough with gusts up to 20 mph and
temperatures in the morning in the 40's. Play was conducted on
the Dye and Ryder Golf Courses that were in great shape.
Over 33 different country's were represented with over 110
international players within the field of 177 players.
A playoff had to determine the winner of the 15-18 girls
division. Chanelle Avaricio from the
Philippines and Germany's Fiona Liddell tied at 221. Avaricio
won the playoff. England's Eloise Healey took third place over
Abby Lim from New Jersey by a match of cards of the total back
nine score. Chanelle is in the graduating class of 2014 and
Coach Hank Stewart from Texas Southern University watched and
word is Chanelle might be heading to Houston. Hank has been at
Texas Southern 40 years! Ana Bonilla of Mexico will be
graduating in June 2013 and is thinking of a full ride by
Alabama State University's Gary Grandison.

Pablo Torres 17, from
Colombia and Samantha Fuller, 13 from UK took overall
championships. Torres comes from a family of 12 brothers and
sisters of which 6 play competitive junior golf. Pablo was
5 under and Samantha captured her sixth victory in a row. Now
labeled Miss PARS she is the youngest girl ever to win the
overall title. Absolutely amazing 6 in a row. Both earned points
from the World Amateur Golf Rankings in Scotland. Samantha in
the 13/14 age group beat Cecilie Bofill from Denmark who is 14
and the champion of Doral/Publix. Samantha had solid rounds of
70-72-77-219. She beat Bofill by one shot. Riley Rennell from
Tennessee took third place.
The competition between local players
Bryce Wylie and Michael Nardone went head to head over the
54-hole competition in the 6 and under division. Bryce won on
the last hole by only 1 shot shooting 75-72-82-229.
Nardone fell short of forcing a playoff with a tough putt
lipping out on 18th hole. Although the boys are great
friends the competition was all business and intense to the very
end. Michael had consistent rounds of 75-77-78. Like any
normal player would be his age Michael was upset over the tough
loss. His mom and caddy dad reminded him that Bryce was
his best friend and he composed himself and walked over to Bryce
and gave him a big hug and off they went as friends fooling
around. Very tough conditions for the younger groups 10 and
under.
The girls 7/8 division was won by
veteran PARS player Hannah Grace Nall, 8, from Starkville, MS.
Hannah broke 90 all three rounds.

Chloe Kovelesky only 5 years
old competed up in this division and was runner-up. Chloe also
won the 6 and under division. The Walsh girls from
Massachusetts, Lily and Emma took third and forth position
followed by Madeline Abutin of the Philippines never experienced
such harsh weather. It was so cold one morning with the wind
chill factor in the 30's the tears from the eyes almost froze.
Kudos' to all these young athletes for completing play and for
the ones that had to WD from competition my hat is off to you as
well for going as far as you did.
In the girls 9/10 age group veteran
PARS player Mimi Chen of Orlando/China beat local star Alexa
Pano by two shots. Alexa was runner-up over Annabelle Fuller
from the UK because of the total back nine match of cards.
Mimi had 243 and Alexa and Annabelle Fuller tied with 225.
Really a tough division of competitors.
Jiyeon Jaong of Korea beat Nina Lang, 11 of
Bavaria, Germany by two shots scoring 235 and 237 respectively.
South American star Valerie Plata of Colombia captured the third
place with a 238 total. Valerie had one shot better than
Thailand's Nicha Vorrasanpisut.
Gabriel Hegerstorm, 8, of Coral Springs had a
great event and beat Japan's Ken Shibata and international star
Napat Vorrasansiput of Thailand by eight shots. Gabriel had
solid rounds of 74-76-77-237.
Coming from California, Alexander Yang, 10,
won the division and opportunity to participate in the Callaway
Junior World in San Diego this July by beating local star Cater
Dalilli. Yang's 68-69 36 hole total was too far in front
of Carter to overcome. Alexander finished with a 77 and strong
victory. Rounding out third place was Alexander Gu of
Connecticut.
Eleven year old Michael Thorbjornsen from
Massachusetts played great and tied the overall score of 211
with rounds of 67-74-70- which is 5 under par. Germany's Laurids
Lohr won runner-up over Carson Levit by a match of cards. Lohrs'
strong 37 back nine score earned him the victory.
In the 13/14 year old division Korea's
Seungtaek Oh beat Austria's Kristoffer Reitan by a single shot.
Oh had the lowest round of the event a 7- under 65 on the second
day. Although Seungtaek shot 76 the final round he still managed
the win. Reitan played consistent golf with 72-71-72-215. Sergio
Ameiro of Mexico took home the third place trophy by 9 shots
over Denmark's Simon Moerk
Our 15-18 division was won by the overall
champion Pablo Torres. Jarle Volden from Norway was runner-up
over Germany's Michael Hirmer by only one shot. Jarle scored
74-68-72-214. Hirmer played two rounds under PAR scoring
70-74-71-215. Only one back was Sasha Wortelboer of Switzerland
who shot 69-71-76-216.

Keep a good attitude, and you persevere, get some breaks and
make some putts, you can still find a way to POST A GOOD SCORE. Never give up or
let your emotions get the best of your ability. You never know when you are
going to hole a fairway shot or chip shot. If you can reach the green you can
make that shot go into the hole. It happens when you least expect it. But it
will happen!

Alexa Pano, 8, Florida. I
am coming! Actually Alexa is one of the best in the World of her age!
Altogether two World Championships, twenty two National Championships. Very
special talent that is made possible by a single dad that has been a
head football coach. Talk about tough! She is a gem. Work and practice
ethics second to none. Doral/Publix

Masters Champion, 2012 Florida State Champion. 2012 South Florida Junior

Alan Kournikova 7, with his US Kids European Championship Trophy in
Scotland. Hello World again. Alan Kournikova has won so many trophies he
will need his own trophy room soon as will his great friend Alexa Pano.
They are like salt and pepper. Simply go together perfectly. Great
friends, but strong competitors. What a swing! He crushes it off the
tee. Mom is tough on him, but that worked with his sister in the tennis
world. And I might add it is definitely working with Alan. She is
building character and society in this youngster at an early age.
Reminds me of Nick, Alexis and Curtis's dad who truly knew how to build
champions. Kournikova had his hands full at US Kids World Championship in
North Carolina and still managed the win over the best junior golfers in
the world his age. Before long Allan will
be holding the Claret Jug Trophy. YOU GO ALA!
One
of my absolute favorite kids in the World. He gave up his bed for me when I was
a guest at his home. I was particularly impressed when his parents told he keeps
his room tidy by himself. His closet was so perfectly organized I could
not believe he did it. All the shoes were together and everything was hung up on
this miniature clothes rack. Than on the side of his home was a soccer field!
Here is this little kid playing soccer with teenagers and adults. He looked like
Magic Johnson with a basketball. He ran rings around around everyone and scored
several times. I could not believe my eyes. Can you agree this kid has a smile
that gleams. Mauricio Figueroa, Mexico 2006 Champion Florida Int'l.
Beau Hossler,
2007, Champion. We all have heard of him and will definitely see him after
college on the PGA Tour. Headed for Texas.
Ben Wong,

one hand. Not possible. I could hardly HOLD that trophy up. Dad is cropped out
in picture but he is holding trophy from underneath!
